  • Todd Barnhill Hair Stylist at Salon Blue

    Todd Barnhill, Owner and Stylist

I’ve always been drawn to things that allow me to be imaginative and to use my hands, whether learning to upholster a couch, to acquiring basic electrical repair, to crafting my holiday decorations. That imaginative and hands-on core attracted me to the hair industry where I found a sense of freedom and the creativity that comes with doing hair.

My journey to Salon Blue began over twenty years ago, when, after spending several years in a corporate environment, I started my formal education at The Douglas J Academy in Lansing. There I was instantly attracted to the coloring aspect of doing hair because in many ways it’s like building something. I found I enjoyed formulating color and creating the perfect shade for clients.

It was after moving to Grand Rapids and accepting my first position at Hotel Venus that I began working with Wella Color Products, which was a game changer for me. Wella provided the education that has helped me become proficient in such things as coloring essentials, crafting the perfect color, and corrective color. They also supply important technical support as needed. Over the past decade, I’ve studied at the Wella’s Chicago Studio several times, each time improving my ability to deliver to clients natural-looking, beautiful, wearable hair color.

I’ve also honed my hair cutting skills at The Sassoon Academy at their Chicago studio. Sassoon’s approaches to hair cutting are unique and I use these techniques to challenge myself to push the boundaries of my cutting creativity.

While I love my work, I do have passions outside of hair. I really enjoy gardening and I can spend hours outside cultivating and nurturing my plants while listening to a good audiobook. My husband and I are members of a car club and have collected a few vintage cars along the way that are perfect for road trips with friends. A great day off would include sitting in my garden with some good music with either a nice bourbon or a craft beer.

  • Kyle Van Port Fleet Massage Therapist

Kyle Van Port Fleet, LMT CMT

Over the years of playing multiple sports like soccer, running, gymnastics, and dancing, I discovered the power of massage therapy upon receiving bodywork after a personal injury. My belief and dedication in the healing arts expanded from those results.

A 2002 graduate of Blue Heron Academy of Healing Arts and Sciences and a clinically trained and a licensed Therapeutic Massage Therapist, I am a member of the American Massage Therapy Association. I spent ten years working in both spa and medical massage therapy which allows me to offer a blend of both relaxation and results driven massage therapy through my practice, Recover Massage, which is housed in Salon Blue.

Since then, my training and specialties include Deep Tissue, Swedish, Sports, Myofascial Release, Active Release Therapy, Trigger Point Therapy, Acupressure, and Craniosacral Massage. Years of experience based on my work in spas and alongside Chiropractors confirmed my belief that the combined therapies truly aid in the management of stress and pain-free living.

I continue to stay up-to-date and believe in increasing my knowledge by taking continuing education classes to exceed national board standards and patient expectations.

“I’ve rented at Salon Blue for 10 years for my massage therapy business. One of the things I appreciate about renting here is that I know exactly what I'll be paying each month, so I never have any unexpected costs. Also, having the freedom to set up the room in the way I want and the flexibility to create my own schedule really makes it feel like my own. The other staff here are professional, friendly and supportive, which contributes to it being a great working environment. Renting a room at Salon Blue has been a great business decision for me.”
